Ryan qualifies for Sheffield

PSC’s Ryan Roberts aged 12, competed in the East Region Open Water Championships last Sunday. It was his first Open Water Event, and saw him compete in a highly competitive age group, to finish the 1.5 KM swim in 3rd place and qualify for the National event in Sheffield on Monday 31st July.

Ryan’s thoughts on Open Water Swimming
“I really enjoy open water swimming. It is different to pool swimming because you’re racing around a course against other people rather than just swimming backwards and forwards in a lane. Overtaking is exciting and fun, and you can get into a good rhythm and pace because you don’t have to stop for walls! There’s lots to keep you going; racing to overtake the swimmers in front or swimming to the next marker – it keeps it interesting and it doesn’t feel like you’re swimming as far as you are. It’s often cold when you first get in but then you warm up during the race. Open water swimming can be tough but it is really rewarding, and you feel proud when you finish and see how far you’ve just swum.

On Sunday I qualified for the English National Open Water Finals by swimming 1500m at the East Region Championships and finishing 3rd in my age group. I was really really happy to qualify and I’m looking forward to racing in Sheffield.”
